John Matheson

John Matheson (1817-1878) was a chairman of the Chamber of Commerce.

The son of a calico printer, Matheson became a clerk and then joined William Stirling & Sons and took charge of their printworks in Leven. A director of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce for many years, he became its President in 1872.

Matheson became a patron of the Arts, with a love of painting, drama and music, and he was a chairman of the Glasgow Music Festivals Committee in 1860 and 1873. He was a supporter of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the first honorary treasurer of the Western Infirmary.
