Sir James Lumsden (1818-1879) was a stationery manufacturer and was Lord Provost, 1866-1869.
Lumsden’s father was James Lumsden who was also a Lord Provost (1843-1846). Lumsden became a partner in the family firm, James Lumsden & Son, and he served as a chairman of the Clydesdale Bank, 1851-1879, the Glasgow & South Western Railway Co and the Clyde Navigation Trust. There is evidence that he was involved in blockade running during the American Civil War, 1861-1865.
In 1860, Lumsden (a Liberal) was elected to the town council. He served as Dean of Guild and City Treasurer before becoming Lord Provost in 1866. He was knighted in 1868 and in a reference to his country home he was sometimes known as "The Knight of Arden".
