William Black

William Black (1841-1898) was a journalist and novelist.

Black wrote his first novel, James Merle, while working as a sub-editor on the Weekly Citizen in his native Glasgow. In 1863 he moved to London. After early difficulties he found employment as a journalist and was sent to cover the war between Prussia and Austria in 1866 for the Morning Star. He later became editor of the London Review and assistant editor of the Daily News. But his first love was literature and works such as In Silk Attire, Kilmeny, and A Daughter of Heth established his reputation as a novelist. Many of his best known romantic novels such as A Princess of Thule and Macleod of Dare were set in the Highlands of Scotland.
