Drumchapel Shopping Centre

A model of Drumchapel Shopping Centre, 1960. The buildings shown made up the first phase of the Arndale Centre built 1962-1964, the second phase being added in 1971. A total of fifty-seven shops of varying sizes were built. Intended to be the major shopping centre for the area, the Arndale forms a traffic-free pedestrian precinct, serviced from the rear and with parking and transport facilities close at hand.

Retailers did not find it easy to trade profitably at the Arndale. Many shops went out of business over the years, and boarded-up premises harmed the appearance of the centre. A report in 1992 noted: "it is evident that retailing activity, particularly in the shopping centre, is under severe stress as a result of population decline, reduced spending power, changing retail patterns and poor environmental conditions."
