Harold Wilson in Glasgow

A photograph from the March 1982 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin, of Sir Harold Wilson signing the visitors' book in the Lord Provost's Room at the City Chambers watched by Lord Provost Michael Kelly and Lady Provost Zita Kelly.

Harold Wilson was a regular visitor to the city. He won four general elections as Labour leader, three of them by margins so narrow that the support of Glasgow's numerous Labour MPs could be said to have been decisive. Wilson resigned as Prime Minister in 1976 and went to the House of Lords in 1983.

Michael Kelly was Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1980 until 1984, during which time his public relations skills were credited with bringing about an improvement in the city's image through the "Glasgow's Miles Better" campaign. He won the "Scot of the Year" award in 1983 and was later knighted. His family had a long-standing association with Glasgow Celtic FC, and he was a director of the club from 1990 until 1994.
