Mitchell Library

A photograph from the November 1982 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin, of librarian Joe Fisher showing some of the treasures of the Mitchell Library's Glasgow Collection to Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. The princess had just opened the £12 million extension to the Library. Also in the picture are Bailie Philip O'Rourke (left), convener of the Arts and Culture Committee, and Andrew Miller, director of libraries.

When the Glasgow Room was set up as a separate department to house the Mitchell Library's local history collection in 1960, Joe Fisher was appointed its first Librarian. He held this post until his retirement in 1990, during which time he established a reputation as an authority on all matters relating to the city's history. Countless enquirers and researchers have benefitted from his assistance. His knowledge and experience were brought to a wider audience with the publication in 1994 of his Glasgow Encyclopedia, which has become a standard reference book on the city's history (and an invaluable source of information for curators working on TheGlasgowStory!).
