Govanhill Street

New housing in Govanhill Street, built for Govanhill Housing Association on what was previously a gap site. The photograph appeared in the September 1984 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

Govanhill Housing Association was established in 1974 as a community-based association managed by local people. Its prime objective was to prevent further demolition of existing houses, by implementing a programme of tenement improvements and involving local residents in the design process.

The Govanhill Street development was one of four in the city chosen by the Civic Trust for its 1984 awards scheme. The housing was described by the Trust as "a robust and delightful scheme. The imaginative use of modest materials for roofs and walls meant that money could be spent on things of more concern to the tenant."

The other Glasgow developments which received awards from the Civic Trust in 1984 were the Grosvenor Hotel, the Mews Arcade in Ruthven Lane (both in Hillhead), and Sighthill Park.
