Buchanan Bus Station

Buchanan Bus Station, photographed in 1996, looking south-west towards the city centre. The office block in the background is St Andrew House.

Buchanan Bus Station is Scotland’s largest bus and coach station and one of the largest in the UK. It was built on the site of the former Buchanan Street Railway Station (which closed in 1966) and provides local, express and long distance services as well as day tour operator services. The photograph reflects the extensive refurbishment which took place in 1995. The number of passengers using the bus station doubled between 1993 and 1998, to 35,000 each day.

Designed by Arthur Swift & Partners, St Andrew House was the first multi-storey office block in the city centre. Built on the site of the former Lyric Theatre at the corner of West Nile and Sauchiehall Streets, it was regarded as state of the art when it opened in 1964. The 15-storey tower block of aggregate panels sits on a two-storey podium, and protrudes over the shops below.
