Sam Mavor (1863-1943), electrical and mining engineer.
Born in Glasgow, Mavor gained valuable early experience with the London firm of Crompton & Co, pioneers in the use of electric light for public use, and as a naval engineer. In 1887 he joined his brother's firm, Mavor & Coulson, which became well known as the manufacturer of electricity generators and other gear and as the provider of Glasgow's first public electricity supply. The Glasgow supply system was subsequently acquired by Glasgow Corporation.
In later years, Mavor specialised in the application of electric power to the mining industry. Machines developed and manufactured by Mavor & Coulson for coal cutting and conveying greatly increased productivity in the West of Scotland coalfields and were sold across the world. Mavor was a member of a number of scientific and technical societies, and made several significant contributions to the literature of engineering.
