Sir James King (1830-1911), businessman and Lord Provost of Glasgow, 1886-1889.
Born in Glasgow, King was educated at Glasgow High School and the University of Glasgow before joining the family business, the Hurlet & Campsie Alum Co. He was a director of the Clydesdale Bank for over forty years (twenty-seven of them as chairman) and a chairman of the Caledonian Railway Company.
Playing an active part in the public affairs of Glasgow, King was at various times a councillor, Dean of Guild, President of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Dean of the Faculties of the University of Glasgow, Chancellor's Assessor to the University, and Chairman of the Clyde Navigation Trust.
King's period of office as Lord Provost coincided with the International Exhibition of 1888. As chairman of its Executive Council he took and active part in organising and directing the event and formally welcomed Queen Victoria on behalf of the city when she visited the exhibition.
