Beanscene

Tables and chairs placed optimistically outside the Glasgow Southside branch of Beanscene, photographed in November 2004. The coffee house in Skirving Street opened in 2000, providing live music and entertainment as well as food and drink.

Around the turn of the millennium, several coffee house chains began a programme of expansion in the city centre and suburbs. As well as the traditional coffee, varieties such as latte, cappuccino, espresso and mocha became commonplace, in addition to a selection of teas. Some coffee houses even took over sites which were previously occupied by pubs, a development that would have been considered unthinkable a few decades earlier.

The Beanscene chain aims to provide coffee houses in local neighbourhoods, rather than in city centre locations. Comfortable seats and newspapers ensure a relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy music, both recorded and live.
