Rothesay 1908

Open air theatre in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, 1908.

In the summer, those Glaswegians who could afford it went "doon the watter" to the seaside. The holiday resorts on the Firth of Clyde laid on a variety of entertainments for the tourists. This open air theatre was on the esplanade at Rothesay. It was booked every year by Robert Fyfe, a Glaswegian, who brought his company of entertainers to the town for the summer season. An enclosed theatre was subsequently built on the site - a much more practical arrangement given Scotland's summer weather!
