The Calton 1844

View of Kirk Street from Green Street by Robert Carrick, dated March 1844.

Robert Carrick was a Glasgow artist who worked in the same lithographic studio as William Simpson. He is best known for his watercolours of Glasgow and the surrounding areas.

This charming watercolour shows the view from Green Street looking down Kirk Street (now Stevenson Street) in the Calton. A grocer's shop stands on one corner, opposite a shop selling wines and spirits. The pace of life seems very leisurely - women gossip in a shop doorway, men loiter on a street corner. The exception is the fight between the two little boys in the foreground, right.
