Fossil shark spine

The finspine of a fossil shark Tristychius found at the Woodside Pits. It is from the fin which projected upwards from the shark's back.

Tristychius lived during the early Carboniferous Period, 360-330 million years ago. Sharks were common during this period and their teeth and spines are abundant in the fossil record.
