Day Trippers c 1913

A group of young people aboard a pleasure boat c 1913. The caption attached to the copy print from which this image is derived states that the party is on a canal boat, but the vast expanse of water in the background suggests they are sailing on the Clyde or a loch.

From the middle of the 19th century, day trips on canal boats or "doon the watter" on the River Clyde, to the west coast resorts or the scenic sea lochs of Argyllshire, became very popular with groups such as bible classes, political societies and other social clubs and organisations. The people in this photograph are all dressed in their best clothes and many are also wearing the same lapel badge.
