Jewish pupils at Gorbals School c 1917

Jewish pupils at Gorbals Public School, c 1917.

Many of the Jewish immigrants who had settled in the Gorbals and surrounding areas by the start of the 20th century had come to escape prejudice and persecution in eastern Europe. Of the 1,600 children attending Abbotsford Public School, Gorbals Public School and Adelphi Terrace Public School in 1916, 1,000 were Jewish.
