Opening of the Hebrew Burial Society Office

The Rev S I Balanow opening the Glasgow Hebrew Burial Society office in Allison Street, Govanhill, in the 1960s.

The Society was founded in 1907 and operated as a mutual aid society. Members contributed a regular amount every week towards the cost of future burial for themselves or family members. Free burial was also provided for the poor. In 2004 the Society is based at Fenwick Road in Giffnock.

Rev Balanow was born in Dunfermline and later moved to London with his family. He was appointed to the Netherlee and Clarkston Synagogue in 1959. He subsequently became Registrar of the Glasgow Beth Din and Supervisor of the Glasgow Board of Shechitah.
