A portrait of Rabbi Abraham Shyne.
Born in Russia in 1841, Shyne became rabbi of the small Jewish community in Helsinki in Finland. By 1885 he had settled in the Gorbals and was acting as a rabbi there, even though the Chief Rabbi had not appointed him. The latter took action to curtail Shyne's activities and gave his support to the Reverend E P Phillips, minister of the Glasgow Hebrew Congregation which included Gorbals Jewry. Nevertheless, Shyne continued to work in the Gorbals and received a small weekly payment from members of the Jewish community.
Syne was an Honorary Vice-President of the Glasgow Zionist Association formed in 1898. He went to Palestine after the death of his wife in 1907.
