The first Scottish Painters' Society was formed in Glasgow in 1853, absorbing the earlier Glasgow Operative Painters' Society. An Edinburgh branch was opened in 1856, and the union was reorganised in 1859. By 1866 the Scottish Painters' Society had been superseded by the National House and Ship Painters' Society, which was centred in Glasgow, had around 2,500 members and campaigned for a nine-hour working day.
The Scottish National House and Ship Painters' Society was established in Glasgow in November 1887. The union had twenty-five branches by 1898 when it was absorbed by the Scottish Amalgamated Society of House and Ship Painters. By 1900 the union's membership had risen from 1,227 to 3,000 members, in thirty-one branches. In 1903 it changed its name to the Scottish Painters' Society and in 1963 merged with the Amalgamated Society of Painters and Decorators.
