Born in Renfrewshire in 1860, Walton studied art in Dusseldorf in the winter of 1876-1877 before returning to Scotland and enrolling at Glasgow School of Art. He also joined the St Mungo Society (a club set up by aspiring young Glasgow artists) where he met James Guthrie (1859-1930). Walton's brother-in-law Joseph Crawhall (1861-1913) was also an artist and the three became friends and influential members of the group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys. They painted together during the summer of 1879 and in the following years. Rosneath near Helensburgh was one of Walton's favourite spots.
In 1886 Walton took a studio in Cambuskenneth near Stirling and many of the Glasgow Boys visited him there. In 1894 he moved to London, taking a studio in Chelsea near that of his friend James McNeill Whistler, and worked there for ten years. Walton went to live in Edinburgh in 1904 and in his later years specialised in portraiture.
