Woodside Crescent, photographed by Bill Tait in 1955. Very little appears to have altered since Joseph Swan's 1839 print showing the same view (also on this website). However, in 2004 the view would include many more cars!
Building work began on Woodside Crescent in 1831, following designs by George Smith (1793-1877). The Greek Doric porticoes at numbers 14 and 15 are of particular interest, as Smith is said to be the only architect to have used this design feature in Glasgow.
In 1955 Partick Camera Club set out to create a photographic survey of Glasgow. As the project progressed, other camera clubs joined and each was allocated a district of the city to photograph. Glasgow Museums exhibited the photographs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and at the People's Place, and in 1956 the exhibition was shown at the Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park. The photographs are now part of Glasgow Museums' collections.
