Royal Wedding Cake

Staff and students at the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science unpacking a wedding cake sent by Princess Elizabeth following her marriage to Prince Philip in 1947.

Princess Elizabeth had become patron of the college in 1944. This automatically ceased on her accession to the throne in 1952, but she was happy to agree to a request for renewed patronage, and eventually to allow the college to be renamed Queen's College in 1975.

The letter in the photograph is held by the Institutional Archive at Glasgow Caledonian University. It reads: "Many kind friends sent me gifts of food at the time of my wedding. I want to distribute it as best I can, and to share my good fortune with others. I therefore ask you to accept this parcel with my best wishes."
