Edward Cornelly was the Superintendent of Police for the Lower Ward of Lanarkshire.
Born in Hounslow Barracks, Cornelly followed the family tradition and joined the army. He saw action in India and Persia, experiences which more than prepared him for a subsequent career as a policeman in Scotland.
Cornelly's headquarters were in the Burgh Buildings in Hillhead. His force was called out in August 1875 to assist in suppressing the infamous Partick Riots which lasted for several days after a march in support of Irish home rule.
