Robert Buchanan (1841-1901) was a poet and author.
Educated at Glasgow High School and the University of Glasgow, Buchanan decided at the age of nineteen to seek his fortune in London, along with fellow poet David Gray. After an initial period of poverty when writing for publishers of "penny dreadfuls" provided him with a meagre income, Buchanan found work with the Athenaeum. A prolific output of poetry, plays and novels, often with a Scottish theme, established his reputation in London literary society. However, a contentious series of polemical essays made him enemies as well as friends amongst his contemporaries.
