James Leitch

James Leitch was a lecturer and Rector of the Church of Scotland Normal School.

After teaching at the Normal School for ten years Leitch was appointed Rector in 1868. A good organiser, he imposed order on the running of the school to an extreme degree. Although conservative by nature, he was always prepared to introduce innovations in educational theory, such as the German Kindergarten system.

Leitch was a director and chairman of the Glasgow Athenaeum, and an elder of St George's Parish Church. He published several books including one of his lectures on education which was badly received by newspaper critics. He resigned in 1877 after a student mutiny.
