James A. Aitken

James A Aitken (1846-1897) was an artist.

Born in Edinburgh, Aitken developed his artistic talent while living for several years in Dublin. He later settled in Glasgow and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy and the West of Scotland Fine Art Institute.

A prolific water colourist, Aitken was particularly fond of depicting rural and coastal scenes in the Scottish Highlands. His use of sparkling colour effects was said to have been influenced by Horatio McCulloch. He also travelled to find subjects for his paintings, with Venice as one of his favourite locations.
