Sir Richard Jebb

Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb (1841-1905) was a Greek scholar and Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow 1875-1889.

Born in Dundee, Jebb was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he established a reputation as a Greek scholar. In 1875 he was appointed Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow, where he lectured on modern as well as classical Greek. He published several works on Greek literature and history, including Attic Orators and Primer of Greek Literature. He helped found the Society for Promotion of Hellenic Studies in 1879 and the British School of Archaeology at Athens in 1887.

In 1889 Jebb was appointed Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, a post which he held until his death in 1905. Jebb was Conservative MP for that University, 1891-1895. He was knighted in 1900.
