By 1901 football had become firmly established as the favourite pastime for Glasgow’s menfolk. With an eye to attendance figures, a new sports stadium with banked cycle track and grandstand was built in the grounds of the University of Glasgow for the International Exhibition of 1901. The match, pictured here being played in a packed ground, is a Charity Cup tie between Third Lanark and Queen's Park.
Other events at the stadium included sports meetings, highland games, cycle racing, wrestling and athletics. Swimming galas and water polo matches were held on the River Kelvin and yacht racing on the Clyde.
