Empire Exhibition

The West African Pavilion at the Empire Exhibition combined displays for the dependencies of Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and The Gold Coast. Nigeria was by far the most important in terms of size, population and resources and this was reflected in the Nigerian section.

The Nigerian Government employed Thomas Tait to design its display. Nigerian hardwood was shown to good effect in the wall panellings, flooring, showcases and furniture, which also featured Nigerian leather.

Other Nigerian products on display included groundnuts, palm oil, tin ore, handicrafts and animal skins. Photographs gave visitors a flavour of both modern and traditional ways of life in Nigeria.
