Tait's Directory p74

The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester. Page 74 lists arrivals and departures at the Glasgow Post Office at the end of the week, as well as information on foreign mails.

Most overseas mail to and from Glasgow was carried by ship via Greenock. The outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, followed by wars which continued until 1815, caused considerable disruption to international mail services.
