An appeal to the citizens of Glasgow to provide a Christmas treat for their soldiers in 1916. The envy this must have inspired in their comrades from elsewhere can only be imagined.
People at home were encouraged to help the war effort in many ways. Money collection boxes were encountered everywhere. Clothing, blankets, tobacco and soap were collected by various relief schemes, usually run by women, which aimed to provide some comforts for the troops. In 1917, the Headquarters Organising Clothing Committee of the Scottish Branch of the British Red Cross Society pledged to send 2,400 mufflers, 1,500 helmets and 1,300 gloves each month to hospitals and casualty clearing stations.
