Royal Visit, 1917

King George V arriving at the City Chambers alongside Lord Provost Sir Thomas Dunlop during a visit to Glasgow and the surrounding area in September 1917. George Square and the surrounding streets were thronged with spectators, kept at a respectful distance.

In the banqueting hall, the Lord Provost presented leading local citizens and industrialists to the King. Such was his heavy schedule that the King left in his car only 20 minutes later.

King George V did much to boost national morale during the First World War. In addition to visiting troops on the battlefields, he toured all the major centres of munitions production in the UK, such as Glasgow.
