City Chambers

A postcard from the early years of the 20th century, showing Glasgow City Chambers and George Square flanked by images of young ladies supposedly typical of Glasgow. The postcard is one of a series entitled "Our Belles" produced by London art publishers Raphael Tuck & Sons.

At a time when Glaswegians regarded their city as being a thriving industrial metropolis, the "Second City of the Empire", it is interesting to see an outsider's view. Tartan and thistles abound.

The image of the City Chambers and George Square is one which appears on countless postcards of the city, although not always with so much wasted foreground space in the form of empty roadway.
