Tollcross Park

A postcard view of the gate and lodge at the entrance to Tollcross Park in Tollcross Road, 1904.

The heavily industrialised East End lacked a natural park area until the acquisition of Tollcross House and 96 acres of land in 1896. The grounds had been well maintained and so relatively little redesigning was required before the park opened in 1897.

The attractive features of the park include a wooded glen, with some unusual trees, and a Children's Zoo. Tollcross Park Leisure Centre was completed in 1996 and is said to have the best swimming facilities in Glasgow. After lying derelict for over ten years, the refurbishment of the Winter Gardens there was completed in November 2000 at a cost of £1.7 million. The building contains a large collection of flowering orchids, cacti, poinsettia and other colourful plants.
