Pettigrew & Stephens Sale, 1933

Ladies' dresses and gowns illustrated in Pettigrew & Stephens' sale catalogue, January 1933.

The Windsor and Mortlake dresses were specifically intended to be worn on the badminton and tennis courts. Increased female participation in sports and other outdoor activities after the First World War provided wider scope for fashion designers. Badminton, tennis, golf, cycling, hiking and swimming were areas where women required specialist clothing. These sports dresses appear a little over-formal for sportswear, to modern eyes, but by the end of the decade women's shorts were a common sight on tennis courts.
