Ladies' stockings illustrated in a sale catalogue issued by Pettigrew & Stephens in January 1933.
Women would be particularly interested in learning of the sale prices as silk stockings were expensive, and tended to ladder easily. Stockings made from cheaper materials were generally unflattering. It was only in 1940 that nylon stockings became available, ultimately transforming women's lives. But for most British women, forced to live with shortages and clothes rationing during and immediately after the Second World War, nylon stockings did not become widely available until the early 1950s.
