Pettigrew & Stephens Sale, 1933

Pettigrew & Stephens Sale, 1933

Men's clothing illustrated in a sale catalogue issued by Pettigrew & Stephens in January 1933.

Men's shirts were a major product of the firm of David & John Anderson of Bridgeton, who manufacutured what were claimed to be "the finest shirtings and dress fabrics in the world." Up to 75 per cent of their output in some years in the 1930s went for export.

The men's underwear industry suffered a severe blow when Clark Gable removed his shirt and revealed a bare chest in the 1934 film It Happened One Night. Sales of vests slumped dramatically. It would seem that Rab C Nesbit, in his fictitious infancy, did not see the movie!
