The "Clyde" overcoat, illustrated in the Walwer styles overcoats catalogue for the winter of 1939-1940 issued by Wallace & Weir, 26 Argyle Street, manufacturers of men's and boy's clothing.
A note to customers states that "all double breasted coats will be made fore-parts lined, taped seams unless otherwise ordered, except body-fitting coats which will be fully lined."
The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 brought mixed fortunes for Wallace & Weir. Materials for ordinary civilian clothing were restricted. But as contractors to the Admiralty and the War Office, the firm benefited from an upsurge in demand for clothing for the armed forces.
