Celtic in Seville

Celtic and Porto supporters, pictured on the front page of a Seville sporting newspaper on the day of the Uefa Cup Final in the city on 21 May 2003.

An estimated 80,000 Celtic supporters from all over the world travelled to Seville for the match, many of them without tickets. It was said to be the largest travelling support for any football match. Celtic supporters won the 2003 Uefa Fair Play Award for their conduct during the cup run. The atmosphere of celebration in Seville was scarcely diminished by Porto's 3-2 victory.

The appointment of Martin O'Neill as manager in 2000 brought about a resurgence in Celtic's fortunes, after years of disappointment. In his first season, the treble of Scottish Premier League Championship, Scottish Cup and CIS Insurance Cup was won. Another league championship followed in season 2001/02. The Uefa Cup campaign of 2002/03 included memorable victories in two-leg matches against Blackburn Rovers, Celta Vigo, Stuttgart, Liverpool and Boavista.
