Royal Polytechnic

The Royal Polytechnic Warehouse, 93-99 Argyle Street.

John Anderson opened what became Glasgow's first department store in Clyde Terrace in 1837 and leased the former Polytechnic Hall in Jamaica Street in 1856. In 1867 he opened the Royal Polytechnic Warehouse, employing 275 men and women there. The ground floor of this popular department store carried all manner of goods, from drapery, small wares, fancy goods and haberdashery. There were four galleries in the floors above, and a dress department. The store was said to have been busy at all hours of the day.
