An advertisement from the Post Office Glasgow directory 1835-1836 for the Western Bank of Scotland at 10 Miller Street. The bank was founded in 1832 and grew rapidly but lent money imprudently, especially to clients in the USA. By 1857 it had over 100 branches throughout Scotland but had insufficient reserves to meet crushing liabilities brought about by economic recession on the other side of the Atlantic. Many of its shareholders were ruined in trying to meet their liabilities after the business failed.
