Advertisements from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1850-1851 for the mangle makers John Cuthbert and Robert Greig. A mangle was an essential item in all but the poorest households. On wash days the family's wet towels, clothing and bed linen was fed through the cylinders of the mangle which were turned by the hand crank to squeeze and press out the water and hasten drying.
