Robert was the son of James Boyd (d 1581), the first Protestant archbishop of Glasgow, 1572-1581. He became Professor of Divinity at the University of Saumur in France and returned to Scotland at the invitation of King James VI to become Principal of the University of Glasgow between 1615 and 1621. He resigned because of his adherence to strict Presbyterian principles: he incurred the king's displeasure, by his unwillingness to promote Episcopacy and support the Articles of Perth, a series of reforms which were intended to unify church practices between Scotland and England under an Episcopal system of church government.
Boyd became Professor of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh and then a minister in Paisley.
