Dick's Among The Gutta

"Dick's Among The Gutta", a song preserved in a scrapbook entitled Old Glasgow Street Songs etc, 1850 which is held at the Mitchell Library.

This is a song about a man who loses his girl to a "Champagne Charlie" who (it transpires) is a mere cobbler. The title refers to the fact that the girl in the song worked in James Dick's factory, which made rubberised soles for shoes from gutta-percha. The Glasgow word for gym shoes, "gutties", is derived from the name of this material.
