Return o' the Gallowgate Lad

"Return o' the Gallowgate Lad", a song preserved in a scrapbook entitled Old Glasgow Street Songs etc, 1850 which is held at the Mitchell Library.

This song is about a young woman's wait for the return of her sweeheart from three weeks' training with the militia. Her song provides a list of the things that the militiaman has done (or not done!) to hurt her - he failed to write while he was away, courted another girl, failed to gain promotion after fighting with his corporal, and paid more attention to her mother than to his sweetheart when he returned (very drunk!) from the militia camp. "Still I think in his heart he's kind."
