William Leckie Ewing

A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of William Leckie Ewing (1798-1866). The painting was by John Graham-Gilbert.

Ewing was a Glasgow Grammar School pupil who joined the West Indies merchants Stirling, Gordon & Co in 1813 and became a partner in 1825. He was also a promoter and director of the Glasgow Union Bank and a promoter of the Scottish Amicable Life Assurance Society. As a member of the Glasgow West India Association he was aligned with those who advocated only the "gradual" emancipation of slaves in the British Caribbean. He retired from business in 1845.

As a prominent and energetic Conservative, Leckie was a member of the delegation which visited the Party leader Sir Robert Peel in 1837 to invite him to a banquet to mark Peel's installation as Rector of the University.
