Coins from Glasgow Mint

A selection of medieval coins, attributed to Glasgow mint. They are probably from the reign of King Alexander III (1241-1286), who reigned from 1249 until his death.

It was quite common for the larger burghs to have a mint house in medieval times. It would not necessarily have been a permanent establishment, as coins were normally struck by moneyers who accompanied the king on his travels in Scotland. Coins also survived from the reign of King Robert III (1337-1406), bearing the inscription Villa de Glasgov.
