Lulu

Singing star Lulu, pictured for the February 1994 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin with Lord Provost Bob Innes. The occasion was the recording of a variety show for BBC Scotland at the Tramway Theatre.

Born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Lennoxtown in 1948, Lulu was brought up in Dennistoun. She was discovered at the age of 14 singing at the Lindella Club. Her rasping version of Shout stormed the charts in 1964 and she became a successful recording star. In 1966 she won praise for her acting in the film To Sir with Love, in which she also sang the title song that became a number 1 hit in the United States.

Further chart successes followed and Lulu continued to perform on stage and television. She was awarded the OBE in 2000 and won a new generation of fans with her appearances at the T in the Park music festival and on the National Lottery TV show.
