John Young

One of Glasgow's longest serving councillors, John Young, pictured for the May 1991 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin at the opening of the Cathcart Heritage Exhibition at the Couper Institute Library.

John Young represented Newlands on the Council 1964 to 1999. From 1977 to 1979 he was Council Leader, as head of a minority Conservative administration. Posts held over the years include those of Police Judge 1971-1972, Deputy Lieutenant of Glasgow, Chairman of the Association of Scottish Conservative Councillors (1991-1994), Member of the Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority (1996-1999), Local Government Commissioner, Rifkind Policy Commission and Scottish Conservative Transport Spokesman (1988).

Young exchanged the City Chambers for Holyrood as a Conservative list MSP for the West of Scotland in 1999. He is the Conservative Deputy Spokesperson on Transport and Environment and an appointed member of the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body.
