Bailie Patricia Chalmers, convener of the Planning Committee, pictured in the pedestrianised area of Sauchiehall Street. The photograph appeared in the July 1988 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin, with the story that a £650,000 improvement project had been completed.
The scheme involved resurfacing and landscaping the existing pedestrianised area between Rose Street and West Nile Street. The main features of were extensive tree planting and the introduction of art nouveau street furniture.
The importance of Sauchiehall Street was further enhanced by two subsequent developments at its eastern end: the completion of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in 1990 and the opening of the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre in 1998.
